MEET THE ARTIST

Greetings! I'm Malaika Sequeira, a fine artist based from Mangalore. The act of 'creating something new' through my work and discovering a more authentic version of myself is what I find most fascinating about creating art. Influences from different art genres may be seen in my works, which are painted on canvas with brilliant colours and precise brush strokes.  I haven't established a distinct style yet. My initial artworks have all been about self-discovery and developing my own artistic style, which I hope to pursue one day.

MY BACKSTORY:

My love for art has been deep-rooted in me from a very young age. It has always sparked my interest, and I have grown to admire it. Both my parents were my motivation in some way or the other, they supported me wholeheartedly.

Art is a form of self-expression that is not bound by rules. That's why I love painting so much: it's just me, my thoughts and emotions, on canvas. I've always had a keen eye for art and have been inspired by the works of great contemporary artists. Each has a story to tell and something to create, and it is their individuality that draws me to their work. I'm also inspired by visual artists like Marcel Van Luit and photographers like my father, Vivek Sequeira, who have a knack for bringing captured moments to life in ways that the average person wouldn't notice.

My exposure to art was mainly through school and church activities. I took it up as a hobby at the time. Gradually when I advanced in grades, I unconsciously gave up my art and put a greater emphasis on academics. When I chose Home Science as my elective, it convinced me that I wanted to pursue a career in the Arts, specifically Fine Arts or Interior Designing. Having doubts about my ability to make a living as an artist, I choose Interior Designing as I felt the subject entailed art as a means of self-expression. But I had no idea that I was about to burn out because my deepest desire was to only produce and fill colours on the canvas rather than work under pressure, which would suppress my creativity.

After feeling out of place in my interior design course, I considered dropping out, but the smallest spark of confidence to dig into making art kept me continuing. I dropped out in 2020 and enrolled in a crash course in 2021 at the BGM School of Art in Mangalore, directed by Mr Shameer Ali. He had a significant impact on my life. He not only taught me the fundamentals that I needed, but he influenced me in other areas, which was an enormous asset to me. Alongside all of this, I began learning about upcoming flea market events and putting my artwork up for exhibition. Each time, I learned something new and met new people. Eventually, I started working with artists. In Mangalore, I collaborated with a group of female artists to create my very first piece of street art. Over time, I also began taking commissions, and I still do now.

My early artworks were more about self-exploration and experimenting with various forms, styles, and techniques. I believe in individuality, and I aspire to be distinctive. My ambition is to carve out a niche for myself as an artist who captures the essence of who I am.

Following that, in 2022, I got the courage to pursue a bachelor's degree at Bangalore's College of Fine Arts. I'm in a fantastic setting where I can learn something new from practically everyone in a variety of ways. This is a four-year programme that includes a one-year foundation course. After finishing this, I'll specialise in painting, and the adventure continues and is still to be told.
